FAQ

CoulOak Little League began its affiliation with Little League International in 1962.  For more than 55 years, CoulOak has offered baseball programs for youth in the Coulwood & Oakdale areas of northwest Charlotte, NC.   We are a non-profit organization who believes in the ideals of Little League and the strong force of community that this great sport brings to the Mountain Island Lake area.

We have many talented players and even a Major League alumni, Chad Tracy, drafted to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2001.  In 2013 we won both the 8U and 9U NC State Championships as well as the Senior League State Championship in 2017.  For the spring season, we average over 250 players from ages 3 to 16.

Ages for play

We offer baseball for players age 4-16. Player ages for the spring season are based on their age on August 31st of that year.  We offer T-ball for 4-5 yr olds, Modified Machine Pitch for 5-6 yr olds, Machine Pitch for 6-8 yr olds, Minor League for 8-11 yr olds, Major League for 10-12 yr olds, and Junior/Senior League for 13-16 yr olds. See the Player Age Chart to find your child's 'league age"

All registrations are now completed online through this web site. We hold in-person uniform sizing/Q&A sessions the weekends prior to tryouts locations are announced using social media.  Click here for detailed player registration instructions

The league provides a game uniform for each player including a hat, jersey, pants, and socks (belts for older players).  All teams are provided with catcher's gear.  Players are expected to provide their own glove and safety equipment (cup, and batting helmet).  Cleats are recommended, but not required.  Bats are not provided by the league, but are often shared amongst players. Make sure any bat you purchase is on the Little League Approved bat list - https://www.littleleague.org/playing-rules/bat-information/

Player Fees are: T-Ball $79,  Modified Machine Pitch & Machine Pitch $150, Minors/Majors/JR/SR League $190.  Player costs are used by the league to pay for field and light rentals (CharMeck Parks & Rec), field maintenance, uniforms, team equipment, umpires, etc.  We do offer partial scholarships.

•Umpires (1 – Machine Pitch; 2 in Minors and Majors)

Tryouts

We have tryouts before each season to balance teams.  Tryouts are simple skill assessments like throwing, catching, fielding, and hitting.  T-ball and Modified Machine Pitch teams are based upon a random draw and do not tryout.  9-11 yr old players may try out for the Major League, but are not guaranteed a spot. JR/SR League is competitive-tryout only and some players may not be accepted. Players are guaranteed spots in the other divisions as long as there are spots available.  Sign-ups are first come- first served. After tryouts, traditional style drafts take place by the coaches.  Coaches should have their rosters and notify players during the week after tryouts.

Practices

During the preseason, Machine Pitch and above teams practice a total of three days a week for 1-2 hours each time (two on weekdays and once on Saturday, Majors teams usually do not practice or play on the weekends).  Once the season begins, teams typically practice one weekday, have a game on another weekday and a game on Saturday.  Modified Machine Pitch is usually a two day per week schedule with practice during the week and a game on Saturday.  TBall schedules are much more limited usually one day a week that can be a game, practice, or both.  The league makes every effort to keep practice and game days the same for each team, but due to field availability and fairness practice/game days can change from week to week.   In the Fall we try to remove all Saturday games to allow our players to participate in other activities.

Volunteers

Our organization is run entirely by volunteers.  We greatly appreciate all that they do so that we can offer a great opportunity like Little League to the youth of our community.  Little League requires background checks on all volunteers (coaches and assistant coaches).  Volunteers can register during sign-ups, for details see the volunteer page.  We also require a copy of each volunteers drivers license and SS# for background checks.

Coaches

Coaches are selected by the board from interested volunteers at a formal meeting the week before try-outs.  Assistant coaches are NOT prearranged and are selected as their child is drafted. We have an annual coaches meeting prior to first practice to cover our expectations of coaches, how our league operates, our rules, as well as good practices.  Coaches are encouraged to seek out the wealth of books available for coaching guidance as well as utilize www.littleleaguecoach.org.

Concession

Concessions are provided by the league and will be available at most games depending on scheduling and facility.  Please let us know if you are interested in helping.

Modified Machine Pitch and Machine Pitch

We use Louisville Slugger Blue Flame pitching machines.  We have found the machines are much more consistent than coaches as well as assuring that players are seeing a pitch at the proper speed to prepare them for the next level.

All-Stars

At the end of the Spring regular season we have an All-Star day where we field two teams from each division for fun games.  Selection to these teams is done by the coaches.  We also field Tournament of Champions teams (7, 8, 9,10,11,12 yr olds) and District Teams (6-7, 7-8, 8-9, 9-10, 10-11, 10-12) for Little League Tournaments following the Regular Season.  Selection to these teams is made by a selection committee from a list of eligible players based on player rankings made by the coaches at each age level.

Special Team Requests

If two players live together and have the same transportation we do our best to place them on the same team.  These requests need to be noted on both player's registration forms.

Umpires

One of the primary goals of Little League is to teach players sportsmanship.  At the t-ball and Modified Machine Pitch level, the coaches act as umpires in the interest of teaching the players the basic rules.  At the machine pitch level, one paid umpire will be provided for each game.  At the minor and major league levels we have two paid umpires for each game.  All coaches, parents, and players are expected to behave in a proper manner with umpires.

Rules

We use the formal Little League rules, but have supplemental rules/information for all divisions.  Rules can be downloaded from the Handouts page on the website.

Fields

We use a variety of fields in our community.  T-Ball and Machine Pitch primarily use the Oakdale Fields.  Minors and Major teams primarily use Oakdale and Coulwood Park fields.  Field addresses and maps are available on the field locations tab on the website.
